Characterisation of Partially Lateritised Khondalite rock for value-added materials

Abstract: Partially Lateritised Khondalite (PLK) rocks are the waste materials generated as a result of mining of bauxite. The major discolouring elemental impurities in the PLK are titanium oxide and iron oxides, which render it unsuitable for its use as a filler material. The impurities in PLK must be removed substantially using appropriate techniques for utilising those rocks as a substitute for clay or clay equivalent or which is acceptable for use in the filler industry. Size reduction followed by desliming of slimes indicates that the slimes contain more of iron and low titanium, whereas the coarse size fraction contains low iron and high titanium. This paper discusses the results obtained in various stages of development of the characterisation studies.
