Abstract: A series of tests, including pickling, surface roughness, scale thickness, composition measurement and cold rolling, etc., were carried out in the laboratory to investigate the surface characteristics of low carbon strip steels which were hot rolled in Compact Strip Production (CSP). The experimental results demonstrate that the scale composition of the strip steel processed by CSP is similar to the one by conventional hot rolling, but its surface is rougher and the scale is thicker. The roughness analysis after the cold rolling process indicates that the surface roughness was affected by the cold rolling reduction significantly.
