The smart pipe: RFID and the oil and gas industry

Abstract: This article explores the prospects for radio frequency identification (RFID) to be utilised by firms throughout the oil and gas industry. The article first provides the reader with an overview of RFID technology, how it works and how it is being applied in various settings. The present research found that innovative companies around the world are finding that RFID can improve their business intelligence and streamline their safety, inspection and supply operations. The article concludes with a look at the potential return on investment (ROI) for oil and gas exploration, extraction and servicing firms to make use of this game-changing technology.
