Sustainable development: the options

Abstract: Global warming is considered in the context of options for achieving sustainable development. There is some uncertainty over global warming processes, so the Climate Change Convention struck the right balance. The Earth Summit reinforced the concept that economic development and environmental management are interdependent, and resources to solve environmental problems must be targeted carefully. Population growth represents a major challenge to sustainable development and can be tackled by basic measures such as education and family planning. Reducing greenhouse emissions is surrounded by complex political and economic considerations, and governments, industry and individuals all have a role to play.
