Technological change and environmental management in industry

Abstract: Environmental management and sustainable development are at the top of the global agenda. In conjunction with the principles of equity and ethics, the implementation of sustainable development has become one of the most important challenges before the world community. Technology lies at the heart of this concern. Industry, in turn, is the largest user and producer of technology, and it produces materials that pollute the environment. The sustainability criteria of technology would entail a change not only in the nature of technology but also in its usage. There are technologies referred to as 'clean', but the deployment of such technologies is not easy. Because technological change is part of social process, society itself must undergo a large-scale re-engineering and evolve clean production systems to ensure the sustainability of sustainable technologies.
