Ball burnishing tool with corrective mechanism of tool position

Abstract: A simple newly designed burnishing tool, with a corrective mechanism of tool position in the form of flat springs, was developed to perform burnishing on turned brass. The effect of burnishing feed, tool penetration and number of tool passes on the surface characteristics was established. The best combination of smoothness (Ra = 0.27 µm) and micro-hardness (Hv = 233 MPa) occurred when the tool rolled once across the specimen surfaces with 0.1 mm/rev feed rate and 0.2 mm penetration. A surface roughness Ra of 0.18 µm and an increase in micro-hardness of 70% could be obtained under specified burnishing conditions.
