Artificial intelligence and its impact on industry: A new dimension within the framework of computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM)
by Gerhard Neipp
International Journal of Technology Management (IJTM), Vol. 2, No. 5/6, 1987

Abstract: The use of new information technologies is an essential key to corporate success. The author calls for a clear strategy for the introduction of CIM, makes suggestions for increased integration of existing CIM subsystems and describes further advances made possible by artificial intelligence. In the long term the trend towards flexible manufacturing will call for CIM solutions which embrace all operational areas. CIM forges the link between previously separate island solutions, appreciably reduces information costs and brings producer, customer and supplier even closer together through data exchange. Artificial intelligence makes CIM concepts more effective and speeds up their implementation. To this end, new interfaces as well as technology- and planning-related knowledge are required for the computer-aided system modules. The modern engineer is called upon to make his knowledge even more transparent and transferable. This is only possible if there is motivating communication throughout the industrial enterprise.
