Commercial technology strategies in high-temperature superconductivity: the USA and Japan
by John A. Alic, Robert R. Miller
International Journal of Technology Management (IJTM), Vol. 4, No. 6, 1989

Abstract: New technical discoveries in higher-temperature superconductivity (HTS) have forced private companies throughout the world to assess the impact of these discoveries on planning for research and development (R&D). Because significant commercial outcomes for HTS are highly uncertain at this time, strategic decisions in R&D are particularly difficult for managements. This study compares the pattern of R&D decision-making in the USA and Japan, using interviews with major executives of corporations of both countries. Important differences are described, which could have a substantial impact on future commercial development of this emerging technology.
