by James M. Utterback
International Journal of Technology Management (IJTM), Vol. 4, No. 6, 1989

Abstract: Commodity businesses, including many consumer goods, materials, and especially metals, appear to be suffering from a lack of demand, and from inflationary pressures. Corporate responses to this largely unexpected turn of events at best reflect the confusion felt by many in trying to understand what is happening, and at worst are pathological, causing great harm to companies' long-term chances of survival. However, some are finding the courage and the means for corporate renewal, creativity and growth, even in such a turbulent economic, technological and political environment.
