The Concerted European Action on Magnets (CEAM): a prototype for international scientific collaboration?

Abstract: More than sixty academic and industrial laboratories in 12 countries have joined in the Concerted European Action on Magnets, which has the goal of developing high-performance rare-earth iron permanent magnets in Europe. From the results of the collaboration it appears to be a useful model for management of informally-structured thematic research projects involving business and industry.
