Abstract: This paper compares some aspects of the national civilian technology policies, strategies and priorities of France, Germany, Japan, the UK and the USA. An analysis is given of similarities and differences in the national 'systems', data on R&D funding, science and engineering personnel and technological outputs; and various options are presented.
