Information systems for business: a look past and a glimpse into the future

Abstract: An organizing classification or taxonomy of the bewildering variety of information systems is useful. The taxonomy set out here begins with two basic types of system: transactional (flow) systems and decision support (batch) systems. It is also possible to devise a taxonomy of system failures which takes account of organizational and human issues. 'Who's in charge' of information system change is a particularly crucial personnel and organizational problem.
