Business and a behavioural tradition revisited: a personal view

Abstract: This paper stems from an inaugural lecture which drew attention to the importance of organisation in the study of business policy and behaviour. In recognising the complexity of organisational life, it went on to emphasise the value of empirical study, of the business history of individual firms, and of transdisciplinary work. In revisiting the themes of the lecture, in the light of subsequent experience, and study of corporate behaviour, especially in the large and complex modern business corporation, the paper refers to growing interest in decision-making processes in groups and organisations. In this context, it also refers to the idea of interactive communication in groups and to organisational learning.
