Performance management: a hologrammatic relationship?

Abstract: This paper explores the possible links between the preferred management styles and conceptualisations of performance in an organisation. The case of hospital accreditation in the USA, Australia and France is studied. Management styles are described, respectively, in the USA, Australia and France as hybrid, behavioural and traditional styles. Conceptualisations of performance in accreditation manuals of the USA, Australia and France are described, respectively, as multidimensional, focused on processes and normative. We argue that any given management style is not associated with some random conceptualisation of performance; instead, there might be a relational logic between these two aspects. The relationship may be hologrammatic in nature and recursive over time.
