Abstract: this paper, a new approach and algorithms for 3D model reconstruction, based on the model symmetry, are presented. After the incomplete 3D model is introduced to the system, symmetry type and model parameters are established, an algorithm is developed for model alignment. Symmetry analysis algorithms are proposed for collecting information on the asymmetric/missing sections of the aligned model on a layer-by-layer basis. The outputs of these algorithms are used to generate the triangular mesh of missing sections of the model. The methodology developed in this paper is illustrated with the 3D model reconstruction examples.
