Developments in grinding process monitoring and evaluation of results

International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems (IJMMS), Vol. 1, No. 4, 2008

Abstract: This paper deals with the new developments on sensor technology for process monitoring. These new developments bring measurements that could be only carried out in a laboratory to the integration of monitoring features in machines in a production floor. Some of the signals could bring redundant measurements, e.g., the relationship of the Acoustic Emission (AE) RMS signals with power, temperature and grinding forces. New applications like the Barkhausen effect could ease the detection of thermal damages and the AE Mapping recognises anomalies in the grinding wheel surface, such as unbalance, edge wear, etc.
