Joint implementation of CO2 emission reduction measures between Switzerland and Colombia

Abstract: This study offers insights about the identification of joint implementation (JI) projects to curb carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in Colombia, which Switzerland could finance to comply with emission reduction commitments. The method uses MARKAL, a bottom-up engineering model of the energy system. Based on the Colombian MARKAL model, this study determines first a baseline CO2 emission path in Colombia. Using a Swiss-Colombian joint MARKAL model, this study then considers a cooperation between Switzerland and Colombia to curb jointly CO2 emissions. The joint model minimises the total energy and emission control cost of the two countries to reach global CO2 emission reduction targets. It enables JI projects in the Colombian energy system to be identified, and illustrates the benefits to be gained through international cooperation to reduce CO2 emissions.
