Abstract: As organisations across the globe have faced stiff cutthroat competition in the last three decades, the Indian industry could not escape the brunt of globalisation. The Indian manufacturing industry has witnessed irrepressible competition in the recent times in terms of low costs, improved quality and diverse products with superior performance. Indian entrepreneurs have understood the significance of improving maintenance performance in organisations. With regards to Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) implementation, Indian manufacturing organisations have often been plagued with teething problems and challenges. The objective of the research is to investigate the status of maintenance improvement initiatives in Indian manufacturing organisations and suggest an Indigenous TPM Methodology (ITPMM) for the Indian industry. A structured ITPMM has been suggested to serve as a guideline for the Indian manufacturing industry. ITPMM is a structured set of strategies that are integrated to help implement TPM successfully and can help Indian entrepreneurs avoid the common problems and pitfalls during TPM implementation.
