Adapting to the future: the role of science academies in capacity building

Abstract: The 21st century will confront many challenges arising from resource scarcity, climate change, emerging diseases, and other yet to be recognised causes. These challenges are global and do not respect political boundaries. Wealthy nations cannot avoid the impacts of climate change or disease epidemics or other resource stresses that may have sources elsewhere in the world. International cooperation aimed at mitigating these challenges is thus in the self-interest of all nations. Moreover, implementing effective solutions to these global challenges requires local science capabilities in every country so that local decision makers can access and utilise knowledge resources.
