Abstract: Present investigation was carried out to reveal the influence of process parameters on transverse finish of the surface ground by a newly developed single layer brazed cBN wheel. This wheel, unlike the commercially used electroplated wheel, was manufactured in-house with regular grit distribution. The results indicated that there was a critical cumulative value of down feed, above which, its influence on transverse finish is insignificant. On the other hand, other two operating parameters that is, table speed and wheel velocity, appeared to have negligible influence on roughness. A single-grit grinding test was also conducted at various grinding conditions. It revealed that there was material pile up along the edge of the groove because of lateral flow of material due to plowing action of the grit. But this material pile-up did not seem to affect surface roughness when the complete wheel performed grinding. It was because of removal of the piled up material by the cumulative and overlapping action of the grits in the transverse direction. Experimental results also indicated that overall transverse roughness of ground work surface produced by such a brazed wheel having uniform but wide distribution pattern was very high and needs immediate attention.
