Abstract: The study established an integrated performance measurement framework for New Product Introduction (NPI) by using the notebook computer industry as an example. Unlike most performance measurement systems for Research and Development functions, the proposed system considered the performance measurement for the whole life cycle of NPI and across the functions involved in the new production introduction processes. Six categories of performance measures were proposed cutting across all phases of NPI life cycle and all functions. In addition to regular intra-departmental performance measures, the cross-functional performance measures were proposed and integrated into the overall NPI performance measurement system. The proposed cross-functional performance measures will provide incentives to product designers to consider the downstream concerns while doing the product design. It will also provide the other-than-design functions the ability to influence the designs toward a more efficient overall performance for NPI.
