Abstract: Recent progress is summarised concerning the modelling studies on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of laminar and turbulent plasma jets. Since different transport mechanisms are involved in laminar and turbulent plasma jets, the characteristics of laminar free or impinging plasma jets are quite different from their turbulent counterparts, in consistence with experimental observation. The existence of substrate significantly enhances the maximum air flow-rate entrained into the impinging jet due to the additional entrainment of the wall jet along the substrate. Adding a solid shield cannot effectively prevent the air entrainment unless the shield is long enough.
