Wear behaviour of mixed ceramic tools and deterioration of surface finish in the machining of an AISI 5140 hardened alloy steel

Abstract: This paper investigates the wear of mixed ceramic tools and relevant transformation of surface roughness in finish hard turning operations on 60 HRC low chromium alloy steel specimens. Both standard and wiper ceramic tools were employed. As a result, the changes of surface profiles and surface roughness parameters were correlated with tool wear. A special attention was paid to the notch wear on the trailing edges, providing substantial modifications of the individual irregularities within the entire surface profile. Practical aspects of this research include the relations between the tool state and the relevant surface finish.
