Abstract: In this investigation, workpiece and cutting tool dynamics in a turning operation are investigated. It is shown that dynamic information from the workpiece propagates to the cutting tool more consistently in the tangential cutting direction than in the radial cutting direction since there is a preload that seeks to keep the tool in contact with the workpiece. Finally, trajectories in the state space comprised of workpiece accelerations parallel to the radial and tangential cutting directions were investigated and it is graphically shown that stable cutting results in more organised dynamics and unstable cutting results in less organised dynamics, which agrees with previous work.
