Power split strategy for hybrid power system with capacitive energy buffer

Abstract: Propulsion systems can be hybridised by providing additional energy sources and energy conversion devices. In a Hybrid Power System (HPS), an appropriate power split strategy is important to distribute the requested power such that overall energy consumption is minimised. This paper presents the analysis and design procedure of a power split strategy of a HPS with a capacitive Energy Buffer (EB). The discussion starts with the description of properties of different components in a HPS. Then, analysis is performed to show the critical factor to design an optimal power split strategy for the HPS in which the Fuel Converter (FC) has faster dynamic response than the power request profile. Next, a power split strategy for the HPS with slow FC dynamic is developed using Pontryagin's Minimum Principle. A numerical solver is used to obtain the solution of boundary value problem of the non-linear ordinary differential equations derived from MP. The optimisation objective is to find the tradeoff between fuel consumption and performance requirements.
