Perpendicular magnetic recording write head design
by Michael Mallary, Mourad Benakli
International Journal of Product Development (IJPD), Vol. 5, No. 3/4, 2008

Abstract: Scaling down recording geometric parameters to achieve higher bit density has resulted in a media thermal stability crisis. This is motivating the change over from longitudinal to perpendicular recording because of its greater thermal stability. The preferred write head for perpendicular recording is the shielded pole geometry which has a better write field gradient than the traditional monopole. These issues are discussed in detail.
