Abstract: This paper addresses the impact of channel waterways on the overall port capacity. In particular, we proposed a definition and two performance measures that can be used to quantify this impact. We then developed a simulation model to simulate the channel activities for estimating the impact of channel under different operating conditions. The simulation results show that when port efficiency level increases, the channels will reduce the overall performance of the port, and thus become a bottleneck in the system.
