International Journal of Healthcare Technology and Management (IJHTM), Vol. 9, No. 1, 2008

Abstract: This paper contributes to the literature regarding the management of healthcare technology, focusing on healthcare information and communication technology (ICT). The research investigates the links between the technological features of ICT and its performance. The theoretical framework is based on cognitive maps. The causal variables and the effect variables have been determined during six months of action research in a large Italian hospital, whose management was committed to adopting a RIS-PACS system to reshape the diagnostic process and to improve the management of digital imaging. The research revealed that cognitive maps could be a useful managerial tool to inform and support strategy and decision-making regarding complex issues such as the design of an ICT system for performance-oriented healthcare.
