Abstract: Reference models have been used for many years by Information Management practitioners. This paper reviews traditional reference model usage and also describes a new use for reference models. The traditional usage is extended to include reference business processes, which are the basis for implementing what the Aberdeen Group calls Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) (Aberdeen Group, 2007). SOA ERP leverages reference business processes to deploy SOA as a mechanism for extending ERP software through composite applications. The main contribution is the positioning of reference models for new approaches to implementing enterprise solutions.
