Abstract: The aim of this research was to determine the limiting values of upsetting ratio in the free upsetting processes and in the cylindrical impression in a Three-Slide Forging Press (TSFP). Obtaining the assumed aim was based mainly on experimental research made on lead. The limiting values of upsetting ratio were determined on the basis of obtained results. Experimental researches were preceded by numerical simulations based on Finite Element Method (FEM). It was stated, however, that they have limited usefulness in the case of the analysis of the processes in which the limiting phenomenon is buckling. The obtained results concerning the limiting conditions of the analysed processes constitute the basis for designing of elongated forgings with thickening. The research results presented in this paper constitute a part of original, systematical research of forgings manufacturing in a prototype forging press with three working slides.
