Abstract: Two novel 5-DOF parallel machine tools are proposed for a 3D free-form surface normal machining by a CAD variation geometry approach. First, the simulation mechanisms of a 4SPS + RPS parallel manipulator and a 5SPS/UPU parallel manipulator are created. Second, a 3D free-form surface and a guiding plane with tool path are constituted and two simulation parallel machine tools are created. Third, the tool axis of the simulation parallel machine tool is retained perpendicular to the 3D free-form surface and the extensions of the driving limbs and the pose of the platform of parallel machine tools are solved automatically and visualised dynamically.
