Abstract: A novel evolutionary computing approach for supporting generative design is presented in this paper. The approach relies upon mathematical expression binary tree structure rather than known binary string in general Genetic Algorithm (GA). The system can generate simple curves, which are generated by using general mathematical expressions and tree structure-based GA, selected shapes are dealt with to form Three-Dimensional (3D) components. These components are classified and saved in a component database. The complex design is implemented via combination of different components that come from component base. The generative process is illustrated by an architectural design example. The result shows that the approach is able to generate some creative solutions and demonstrates the power of computational approach.
