A survey of desktop grid applications for e-science

Abstract: Desktop grid computing is a relatively new technology that can provide massive computing power for a variety of applications at low cost. These applications may use volunteered computing resources effectively if they have enough mass appeal to obtain a large number of users. Alternatively, they can be used as a distributed computing application within a corporation, intranet, or worldwide distributed research group. The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) provides a proven open-source infrastructure to set up such projects in a relatively short time. In this paper we survey scientific applications that have adopted this type of computing paradigm.
