Abstract: This paper first establishes a formalised function model of mechanisms conceptual design, which is mathematically described and reasoned from design requirements to primitive products. A manipulator's hand is used to illustrate modelling steps and reasoning algorithm. Secondly, mechanism synthesis rules and algorithms are proposed. Entities and Cartesian product are obtained to generate all possible mechanism chains and graphs. Watt-chain, a mechanism of manipulator's hand, is provided for further explanation and validation of this methodology. Finally, scheme reasoning technology and mechanism synthesis methodology are united and a process model of design schemes generation is advanced based on polychromatic set theory.
