Abstract: The significant design considerations of on-board chargers (OBCs) are better efficiency and more power density. To improve OBC power density in terms of weight, area, and cost, the charger can be integrated with an electrical drive system. In this paper, an isolated bidirectional integrated on-board charger (IOBC) is proposed with a bidirectional voltage source converter (VSC), which utilises the stator windings of the BLDC motor to charge battery stacks when the vehicle is at rest. In propulsion mode, the same VSC switches are used as an inverter to drive the BLDC motor. The design consideration and steady-state operation of the proposed charger are presented. The input power factor (IPF) and total harmonic distortion (THD) of grid voltage and current are observed to assure power quality aspects. Additionally, the proposed IOBC is capable to carry out charging operations using single-phase domestic outlet along with propulsion of electric vehicles without introducing any other circuit. It also provides reduced switching stress, less voltage, and current ripples as well as lower filter size.
