Manufacturing Systems Engineering - a review

Abstract: An academic subject, ''Manufacturing Systems Engineering'', proposed in 1975, is historically reviewed by defining manufacturing/production systems, and manufacturing systems. The social role and future perspective of manufacturing systems (engineering) are also discussed, stressing ''socially appropriate manufacturing'' as manufacturing excellence for the 21st century.
