International Journal of Sport Management and Marketing (IJSMM), Vol. 2, No. 5/6, 2007

Abstract: In this paper, we test for the relationship between sports and tourism, using an annual time series for the Island of Madeira between 1976 and 2003 with a Vector Autoregression (VAR) model. Allowing for unit roots and structural breaks, we conclude that there is a positive and statistically significant relationship between sports and tourism in Madeira. Therefore sports promote regional development.
