Transportation and market feasibility analysis for innovative coal combustion by-products: WoodBrik™ in Greenbrier County, West Virginia

Abstract: This paper outlines a transportation and market feasibility study performed in support of Western Greenbrier Co-Generation, LLC's participation in the first Department of Energy Clean Coal Initiative. Western Greenbrier Co-Generation, LLC is a unique company formed by three local city councils to support the development of clean coal technologies in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. The study evaluates the transportation costs and production feasibility of WoodBrik™ as a prime building product constructed from Class C fly ash from a co-located power facility. WoodBrik™ also requires wood product by-products, a common by-product of the wood products industry, which enjoys a heavy presence in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. In addition to providing feasible clean coal power production (through value added in the construction material), this site is located on the State of West Virginia's worst state-controlled acid mine drainage site, which will be reclaimed as part of this production activity. This study finds the production of WoodBrik™ to be economically feasible in this location.
