Identification of environmental management practices in the Colombian industry

Abstract: Environmental management is a social responsibility strategy and is process-oriented towards environmental care and sustainability, as there is a growing concern for the impact of human activity and the need to develop responsible production systems. To evaluate and identify environmental management practices, their approach and their characteristics, this paper statistically analyses, using InfoStat and SPSS, the results of the 'industrial environmental survey' developed by the DANE of Colombia on 3,073 manufacturing companies in order to know the dynamic of certifications, tools, investment, and expenditure in corporate environmental management by regions and economic sectors. The results showed differentiation in economic activities at the regional level, the association of certifications and environmental management tools with regions and the economic sector, which provided practice evidence about the influence of institutional frameworks on environmental practices, and similar investment and expenditure profiles for impact prevention and mitigation between the Amazonian-Orinoco, Eastern, and Caribbean regions.
