Experimental and analytical study of the behaviour of a composite floor with novel types of shear connectors

Abstract: The horizontal shear transmission action at the steel-concrete interface is responsible for the composite slab's strength. The bond strength is improved by embossment and by the shear connector, which creates a link between concrete and steel sheeting. Fixing shear studs by welding reduces the strength properties and also adds to the cost. In this paper, five composite slab specimens were cast and tested in accordance with Eurocode 4 and also three novel shear connection systems were proposed. These three shears connection systems were compared with end shear studs. The results of nonlinear finite element analysis show a strong agreement with the results of the experimental study. It is found that the staggered scheme of reduced flange channel shear connectors with and without longitudinal rebars approaches the complete interaction condition. Transverse rebars integrated with profiled deck sheet also proves to be a better alternative to conventionally used end shear studs.
