Computational analysis of the plant pathogen Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. punicae genome to manage its bacterial resistance in pomegranate

Abstract: To address this issue of antimicrobial resistance in the proteome of the plant pathogen Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. punicae (Xap), which causes blight disease in pomegranates, alternate drugs and their targets were identified using computational techniques. These drugs have no antimicrobial resistance. The unique proteins of the pathogen were initially identified by using the subtractive genomics method, followed by the prediction of essential virulent proteins. The final dataset contains 97 of the essential and virulent proteins of the pathogen, which are non-homologous to pomegranates and also to humans but have homologs in other bacterial species which have identified drugs in DrugBank. Deoxycholic acid was the drug, which has drug targets in other bacterial species that are homologs to the Xap proteins. Furthermore, docking studies show that the deoxycholic acid binding pattern is similar in both the Xap protein and its E. coli homolog drug target, ArcB.
