The role of the inland container depot system in developing a sustainable transport system

Abstract: Seaports are becoming more and more congested and overloaded due to the increase in cargo, leading to some bad conditions in terms of traffic and the environment around the port area, such as traffic congestion and environmental pollution. To solve these situations, solutions to reduce seaport congestion have been researched and proposed, one of which can be applied immediately and has long-term effects is the inland container depot (ICD) system. In this paper, some important roles of ICD in the seaport and transportation system are presented. Indeed, this paper highlights three advantages of the ICD system, which are: 1) reducing container congestion; 2) reducing CO2 emissions; and 3) developing port area development. Also, this paper emphasises the role of ICD in having a positive impact on the environment and society. In addition, the paper also mentions some development trends for the ICD system in the future.
