Shipping optimisation systems for liner: en-route bunkering, port late arrival, and tide restricted sailing

International Journal of Shipping and Transport Logistics (IJSTL), Vol. 16, No. 1/2, 2023

Abstract: This paper extends the work of El Noshokaty (2013) on the liner operational management level as to discuss the problems of ship en-route bunkering, late arrival at port, and sailing to port experiencing low and high tide. It finds the optimal mix of cargoes, which maximises the voyage stochastic gross profit per day, considering the collective interaction between the three problems. It then applies the sensitivity and what-if analysis for ship speed and fuel consumption, cargo quantity and freight rate, and cargo handling rate and handling charges, concurrently. The mixed continuous-integer linear programming solves the problem mathematical model. A case study finds, for a given liner ship, the optimal cargo mix; of which some cargoes have a stochastic transport demand, considering the en-route bunkering, port late arrivals, and low tide sailing, and applying sensitivity analysis to ensure the model validity. It demonstrates findings that are more realistic, viable, and resilient.
