Simulation of thermal loading on vitreous bonding bridges of vitrified grinding wheel

Abstract: Vitrified super-abrasive technology plays a leading role in precision grinding. The importance of vitreous bonding materials is obvious, given the new formulations proposed by wheel manufacturers. However, important issues still need to be addressed. Although it is generally accepted that high temperatures, the thermal shock effect, and the thermal cycles induce damage on the wheel structure, no studies have estimated their influence on vitreous bonds. This work aimed to obtain a qualitative insight into the evolution of the temperature fields developed in the vitreous bonding bridges. A finite element model has been proposed for solving the transient thermal problem, considering the thermal mechanical properties of the wheel components. Simulation results indicate that heat conduction from the abrasive grains is not relevant. However, under the assumption of contact between workpiece and wheel structure, the results show temperatures well in excess of those associated with softening and thermal shock of classical alumino-silicates.
