Performance of schools in Australia: evidence from Malmquist indices

Abstract: The current study constructs a balanced panel dataset on 8,314 schools operating in Australia during 2009-2015 and applies the Malmquist index methods to examine performance of the schools. The empirical results show that schools in Australia underperform during the study period. In addition, schools in Australia Territory Capital, New South Wales and Northern Territory perform better than those located in other states and territories, special and secondary schools are productive while primary and combined ones are not, independent schools are productive, but catholic and government ones are not, schools in very remote and metropolitan areas well perform but those located in remote and provincial regions do not. Moreover, the number of schools and government expenditure on education play an important role in performance of the schools.
