Abstract: With the advent of the fourth industrial revolution, better known as Industry 4.0, the overall transformation of the manufacturing industry with digital integration and intelligent engineering has taken a giant leap forward in the direction of futuristic technology. This article aims to paint a clear picture of the implementation constraints of the Industry 4.0 concept in terms of publications and research diversification. The article consolidates and synthesises current findings from studies of Industry 4.0 adoption challenges, develops theme maps and clusters, and suggests some innovative future research prospects in this globally prevalent field. 777 articles were retrieved from the Web of Science and Scopus databases. The findings indicate that research in this area initially concentrated on the challenges associated with adopting AI-enabled technologies. Further, it was aided by concerns relating to the internet of things, the industrial internet of things, cyber-physical systems (CPS), and the intelligent factory.
