International Journal of Technological Learning, Innovation and Development (IJTLID), Vol. 14, No. 3, 2022

Abstract: Firms acquire technological learning either formally or informally to enhance capabilities for better performance and competitiveness. This paper utilised secondary data from the 2014/2015 World Bank Enterprise Survey Database, complemented with a case study of a lead firm in the Nigerian garment industry to gain better understanding and present insights into technological learning mechanisms. Formal technological learning, in the form of research and development, is undertaken by few firms in the industry while majority undertake informal modes of technological learning. The logit results on determinants of technological learning by firms in the Nigerian garment industry showed training of employees, firms located in an industrial park, joint ownership of firms, and the level of education of top manager as significant factors. Technological learning by firms requires the commitment of the firms and support of relevant stakeholders including the government.
