Abstract: We analyse colour trends and recognisability in artwork through different averaging techniques. The averaging techniques divide the image in different ways, such as dividing it into a grid, columns, or rows, and taking the mean colour of those subdivisions. We apply these averaging techniques to several categories of art - impressionist, cubist, monochromatic, polychromatic, landscape, portrait, and still life. Our research identifies which colour averaging technique makes a certain type of artwork the most recognisable, and uses standard deviation to automatically chose an averaging technique.
