A novel three-tier model with group-based CAC for effective load balancing in heterogeneous wireless networks

Abstract: Seamless and ubiquitous connections are the ultimate objectives of 4G technologies. But due to randomised mobility and different service class of applications, the connection failure rate increases, which can be overcome through handover (HO). With the increased demand for handovers, the number of networks scanned for decision making and the number of negotiations for connectivity become too large. To improve their efficiency, a three-tier model is proposed, where requests for similar type are grouped and a common negotiation is made to reduce the number of communication messages. Only qualified networks among all the reachable access points are chosen for decision. Handover need estimation is performed to reduce the unwanted handovers. Finally, an adaptive resource management is made possible through a group-based call admission control (GB-CAC) algorithm that harmonises up to 50% of the resource utilisation, ensuring higher numbers of connections with negligible percent call blocking and dropping.
