Performance of SnO2/Al working electrode as an electrochemical biosensor for potassium (K+) ions

Abstract: The erratic variation of potassium ion (K+) in the human body results in many fatal diseases relating to kidney and heart. Hence, regular monitoring of the same is extremely essential. This encouraged us to fabricate an electrochemical biosensor using SnO2/Al as a working electrode by indigenously designed chemically wet and dry (CWD) technique to monitor K+ ions. The structural and morphological properties of the prepared SnO2/Al electrode were characterised through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) images. From XRD and FESEM analysis, phase formation and porous nature of micrographs were observed, respectively. The SnO2/Al interface was found to be Ohmic, from the current-voltage (I-V) study. By taking SnO2/Al and Ag as working and reference electrode in the electrochemical amperometric experiment, K+ ions were detected at low concentration (1μM) of KOH solution at room temperature. The SnO2/Al electrode displayed better performances like fast rise time (9 s) and recovery time (53 s).
